Richard A. Cooper & Dr. Harold Harlan

Richard Cooper is technical director of Cooper Pest Control, a family owned pest control business based in Lawrenceville, N.J. A graduate of the University of Delaware, Cooper earned his master’s degree in Entomology from Rutgers University in 1991, authoring a thesis titled, “Effect of Feeding and Nutrition on the Development and Reproductive Physiology of German Cockroaches.”

He is the frequent speaker at industry educational events, including the Purdue University Pest Control Conference, and has published technical articles in such well-known trade journals as PCT and Pest Control magazines, as well as the Journal of Economic Entomology.

Cooper is a member of numerous organizations, including the New Jersey Pest Control Association, National Pest Management Association, Entomological Society of America, New Jersey Environmental Federation, and Pi Chi Omega, a pest control industry fraternity.


Dr Harold Harlan, senior entomolgist for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), earned his Ph. D. in medical entomology/acarology in 1984 from The Ohio State University. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1994 after 25 years of active duty as a Medical Entomologist, which included tours in Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.

He has authored or co-authored more than 35 scientific articles and is currently active in more than 12 scientific societies. He has been a Board Certified Entomologist or its equivalent predecessor (A.R.P.E.) continuously since 1973, and is currently certified in both medical/veterinary and urban entomology, he is a current member of the honorary/service fratemities Ph Chi Omega and Sigma Xi.

Harlan has a rather broad base of experience in entomology, and has worked in applied situations with a variety of technical subjects, including Lyme disease and hantavirus. He joined the NPMA as an Entomologist in January 1997. He lives in Crownsville, Md. with his wife of 35 years, Norma. They have two grown sons, Kevin and Jason.
